After two wildly successful events at the Southbank Centre, Classic Car Boot Sale is heading east.
This September, over 150 vintage vehicles will descend on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, putting a retro spin on the humble car boot sale – over 100 of them will be opening their boots for shoppers, selling vintage fashion, accessories and homeware. With street theatre, vinyl-spinning DJs and impromptu musical performances, this will be the biggest boot sale yet – previous events have drawn over 8,000 visitors each day.
Highlights include Crystal Vintage’s Gloria Pop-Up Boutique, a horsebox turned vintage shop featuring highly collectable pieces from the likes of Chanel, Dior and Ossie Clark, one-off upcycled furniture items created from old cars and aeroplanes courtesy of Rusty Nail Restoration, and vintage advertising and Americana from The Old Collectors Garage.
Ticketholders will be entitled to free tickets for VUE Statford’s classic film screenings: the likes of The Railway Children, Kind Hearts & Coronets, Passport to Pimlico and The Lavender Hill Mob will be showing over the course of the weekend.
The Olympic Park will also play host to its first mobile art fair, 'Portability: Art on the Move.' Showcasing the best of mobile architecture, expect an intriguing range of art vehicles, with everything from a poetry potting shed to an artist's studio on wheels, and even a giant travelling seagull. Part of London's Open House weekend when, as the name implies, the doors of striking or historic buildings are opened to the public, there's also a programme of film and talks from artists including American film-maker Mike Kelley and Danish collective N55.
