    Central
    Lower Marsh Market
A lunchtime trip from one end of this little local market to the other could yield a pile of quality veg (radicchio, rucola and celeriac, as well as apples and spuds), a tub of satsumas (£1), a skirt that looks like it could have come from Comfort & Joy (£3), three Duracell batteries for a fiver, over-the-knee stripey socks (£1) and bad jokes from the guy selling security alarms (‘The bad news is they’ve amputated one of your legs; the good news is the bloke in the next bed wants to buy your slippers’). Surrounding shops are worth a look, too: there are several decent vintage shops, including What the Butler Wore (No 131, 020 7261 1353), William Prophet’s fabulous jewellery (No 11, 7928 7123) and fetish shop Honour (No 86, 020 7401 8219). You’re never far from good food here, either. Try superb organic curries at Marsh Ruby (No 30, 020 7620 0593), or a jacket potato and restorative cup of Lavazza coffee from the Walrus pub (172 Westminster Bridge Rd, 020 7928 4368) at the end of the market.
Lower Marsh Market, Lower Marsh, from Westminster Bridge Rd to Baylis Rd, SE1. Waterloo tube/rail. Open Mon-Sat 9am-5pm. Feature continues

    Riverside Walk Market
Located in front of the National Film Theatre, Riverside Walk Market gets bigger as the weather gets better. It’s at its busiest at weekends. Rows of trestle tables are stacked with books, maps and old hand-coloured lithographs and wood engravings (from £10) from all over Britain. There’s plenty to browse through, from hardback picture volumes, first editions and weighty academic tomes to hundreds of Penguin paperbacks, sci-fi thrillers and trashy romances. Find that book on vampires, medieval needlepoint or Marxist economic theory. There’s usually plenty on offer for art, film and theatre buffs, including plays, scripts and cut-price glossy art books. Pick up Haruki Murakami’s latest hardback for £6.99 (almost half-price) or ‘100 Years of American Newspaper Cartoons’ for a tenner. A 2005 ‘Beano’ annual costs £3.50 or an old Puffin: ‘Smoky: The Story of a Horse’ by Will James for a fiver.
Riverside Walk Market, outside the National Film Theatre, under Waterloo Bridge, SE1. Waterloo tube/rail. Open noon-7pm daily.

How can you say Whitechapel market is one of London’s best? It is one of the worst! It is dirty and the stallholders don’t seem to have much regard for the environment – there is rubbish all over the place. I think it should be shut down!
