  • There's been a rash of store openings in east London, from avant-garde vintage to well-known fashion brands, and nail salons to cult shoe shops. Time Out trawled the back streets and interrogated the locals to compile this guide to the shops at the cutting edge

      A bright white, clinical interior houses labels from streetwear Billionaire Boys Club and Japanese Haversack to Raf by Raf Simons and the odd polka-dotted pair of socks. Read more

      The East End's most avant-garde (if tiny) boutique; the small space is filled with one-off exclusives. It's run by James Main, of club-night Boombox fame. Read more

      Another retail pop-up that has become something of a semi-permanent fixture (open until late 2009 at least) is the somewhat conceptual-looking Doc Marten's space inside Old Spitalfields Market. Read more

      A Time Out Shopping Award winner, Albam specialises in a pared-down, retro-edged aesthetic – its original Beak Street store has now been joined by this east London outpost. Read more

    • Milk

      118 1/2 Shoreditch High St, E1 6JN

      Husband-and-wife team Luca and Nathalie Bomio offer the usual design-store fare such as Fornasetti plates and ToyWatches, alongside some truly brave picks, from luridly dyed cowhide rugs to Milanese designer Fabio Novembre's plump-buttocked Him/Her resin chairs cast from naked bodies.       In a hipster neighbourhood that is rapidly becoming choked with vintage stores, Speedie's competes with low prices, monthly gigs and parties, and great customer service (you can even get afternoon tea). Read more

    • King and Queen of Bethnal Green

      41 Temple St, E2 6QQ

      Tucked away on Temple Street, E2, Kim Heidi Lewis's boutique is a showcase of oddities, accessories, jewellery and books. The perfect add-on to a trip to Columbia Road or Broadway Market. Read more

      Arches 477-478 Bateman's Row, EC2A 3HH

      Nike's clubhouse for their most loyal (and obsessive) fans, 1948, is hidden under the railway arches on Bateman Row, a sidestreet connecting Great Eastern Street to Curtain Road. Read more
