Gay's the Word

In 2010, as Camden council threatened a rent hike of 25 per cent, the future looked uncertain for Britain’s only dedicated gay and lesbian bookshop (established in 1979). Its last financial crisis was back in 2007 when the shop launched a shelf-sponsorship programme called Cash for Honours, which drew support from loyal customers including Sarah Waters, Ali Smith and Simon Callow. Stock covers fiction, history and biography, as well as more specialist holdings in queer studies, sex and relationships, children, and parenting. In addition to regular author readings and book-signings (think Adam Mars-Jones, Armistead Maupin, Neil Bartlett, Clare Summerskill), there are weekly lesbian and monthly trans discussion groups.

Located in Bloomsbury, Gay's the Word is a small, yet solid bookshop that is well worth a visit. It offers an array of both LGBT fiction and non fiction that is worth browsing. Individual bookshops such as this one are worth supporting particularly as we live in an age where it is so easy to buy off Amazon, but I think now more than ever we should always give bookshops such as Gay's the Word support. They will always have something for you and the knowledge that the staff possess is second to none.

It is a shame that it isn't in a easier to reach district such as Soho or Charring Cross but perhaps that is part of its charm. That is doesn't conform to expectation, but instead still holds it's own in an ever changing literary market.

Wonderful Bookshop, I go whenever I'm in London as the staff are so friendly and knowledgable. The best of independent book selling!
