Andrew Barton Salon

BEST FOR CUTS

He may be a celeb and TV favourite, but there’s nothing intimidating about Andrew Barton’s eponymous salon – his Covent Garden venue is his friendly ‘home away from home’, with stylists and clients alike gabbing away to each other over tea and biscuits in an uber-relaxed setting, complete with strokeable flock wallpaper puppies. When not on shoots with the likes of Lily Allen, Andrew’s in the salon for just two days a week, but if you’re in need of a one-off transformation, his Andrew Barton Makeover is well worth the £510 for cut, colour and finish.

It was founded nearly a decade ago by Lisa Atherton and Paul Cox, and the team is now nearly 40-strong, catering predominantly for glamorous thirtysomething Marylebone professionals and yummy mummies. Thanks to Men’s Hairdresser of the Year award-winner Desmond Murray, who charges £116 for a ‘re-design’, it’s a go-to for a brilliant gents’ cut too.

The Spa and Barber at Alfred Dunhill

BEST FOR MEN'S LUXURY

You may feel a little self-conscious approaching the rather grand Bourdon House, home to luxury brand Alfred Dunhill’s flagship store, but a calm, unpretentious welcome makes you feel as though you’re a member of an exclusive men’s club (which, incidentally, is just what occupies the other half of the building). Step through clouds of cigar smoke on the Cellar Bar patio, up the plush carpeted staircase, and into the barbershop where everything is exquisitely done yet reasonably priced.

Stuart Philips

BEST FOR CUTS AND BLOW DRIES

Having tended the tresses of the rich and famous from Ivana Trump to Jamie Oliver, Stuart Philips retains a remarkably down-to-earth attitude and his plush Covent Garden salon reflects his friendly, professional demenor. We are always impressed by the treatment we receive here – on a recent trip the blow dry we had managed to give volume to our fine, limp hair with out making it frizzy. The interior is ultra-comfy and induces instant calm; recline in cool leather chairs and have a chat with the friendly, informative staff. From £30 for a wash and blow dry.

Charles Worthington

BEST FOR COLOUR AND CUTS

For no-nonsense blow-dries, great colour and cuts in bright, comfortable surroundings, Charles Worthington is your man. We have long frequented the Percy Street outlet for lunchtime blow-dries (from £36) and can’t fault the customer service – a bowl of nuts and glass of bubbly is always offered within seconds of sitting down (you can have unlimited top-ups for a £2 charge. By our reckoning, if you drink enough, you can break even). The salon is minimal but super-comfortable, and for a place with such a big name behind it, it is remarkably friendly.

Gentlemen's Tonic

BEST FOR MEN'S HAIR AND GROOMING

Upmarket gents’ hairdressers in the West End tend to fall into two camps: the fogeyish, or the achingly trendy. Gentlemen’s Tonic is neither. It caters for well-heeled men who are past youthful experiments with 'interesting' hairstyles, and who prefer to look smart and well-groomed in a modern but classic style. The salon is well-appointed with a relaxing reception area, and decorated in an understated masculine style in the style of a smart tailors’ shop.

Gielly Green

BEST FOR LUXE CUTS

You can tell a fair bit about a salon from the calibre of towel on offer. At this swish Marylebone hairdressers they’re as thick as duvets and the colour of caramel highlights. That level of service runs through the whole establishment, which is darkly glossy and reassuringly expensive. Cuts cost up to £144 (although you can get a junior stylist for £55), but if you have the money to spend, it’s a great place to spend it.

  • After reading their reviews I tried out Foster London Hair & Beauty. The place is beautiful and pretensious and had a really relaxed feeling, something lacking in other salons, my fine hair is difficult to colour as it becomes damaged very easily but I was given a free strengthening treatment at the hair wash which actually thickened my hair as well as giving it an amazing shine. Next my hair was cut by Drew who managed to give me more volume than I can remember ever having, I'm not a review girl but have tried many other salons in the area and it's all about taking your money and poor service so it was great to finally find a salon who cared about my hair and didn't pretent to be something they are not! I'll definately be going back and telling all my friends. Viva Foster London!

  • I would definitely recommend Foster London Hair & Beauty, Sclater Street, E1 (next to shoreditch high street station). It is newly opened and run by Nadia and Drew Foster. I have been getting my haircut by Nadia for quite awhile now and she is definitely the best hairdresser & colourist I have come across in London. I have complete faith in her recommendations and I have always walked away from a haircut extremely pleased with both the cut and colour. Their new salon is a credit to them both, a lovely bright and friendly enviroment with copious drinks and complimentary cheesecake - what more do you need!

  • Dear Red Recommend... I can personally vouch for Bruno at the Aveda Institute on HIgh Holborn, his work is of the highest calibre, and he has done many different shades and blends of red for me in the past. I haven't been myself, but I have heard that Red Head on Charlotte Place is quite good as well... best of luck!

  • Can anyone please recommend an AMAZING colourist in London, especially for red hair? I find that it is so tricky getting the right shade of red to compliment my skin tone and eyes (I guess that's the case with all colours really), and not many colourists have managed to do a better job than I can at home myself. Also, a lot of colourists I've gone to tend to just pull out the colour chart and ask which shade I would like. I often ask them to recommend "the perfect shade of red" for me (after having it done kind of but not quite right so many times, it's getting hard to tell), but disappointingly they often fail to rise to the challenge. I believe that is what distinguishes a great colourist - the moment they see you they know exactly what will look best on you. THAT is what I'm looking for. Please leave a comment if you can recommend someone!

  • Sarah... I thought I was the only one who had been put through a hair colour f***-up so horrific that I too needed plying with alcohol. I genuinely feel for you. I went to Daniel Galvin who rescued my self-esteem and shoulder length hair (I am surprised I had any left) from a 7 hour bleaching experience from hell in a "trendy" Shoreditch salon. I left with silky, shiny hair and a healthier looking skintone. I was most impressed by their patience because I must have easily been the most over-anxious, picky client they have ever had to deal with. I also appreciated their honesty about what it would be possible for them to actually do. It didn't come cheap but I felt safe there. Good luck x
