NB. On the Beat has now closed.

Put thoughts of Norman Wisdom’s 1967 police comedy to one side: On the Beat is for record collectors of all stripes. Spend 15 minutes thumbing here and you’ll definitely come out with something you’d forgotten you always wanted. The well-priced, mostly vinyl collection is crammed into a small room, walls lined with posters and dog-eared music mags that date back decades. In manager Tim Derbyshire’s words, the large collection covers ‘everything but classical’ – you’ll find a wealth of old funk and soul albums, a huge number of library sound compilations and a good range of jazz, country, folk and ‘girl singers’ records; the rock section covers everything from 1960s psychedelia to ’90s pop.

Great unpretentious record shop. Found the manager friendly and helpful. Bought a Fall album at a very good price, prices seemed very reasonable in general. Lots of stock so you'll need some time to look through but sure you'll find some gems

Most records on this shop are poorly organized and all second hand ready to the bin, you need gloves, all 100 years undusted stuff. Not worth wasting your time there, shurly you wont buy a thing. As a bonus the shop keeper would look at you as a shop-lifter rather than a costumer.

After hearing something I liked by chance as I walked by I eagerly entered this store to try and find out what it was. I have to say I don't think I've ever been treated more rudely! When I asked what the track was I was told 'It's John Barry' so then I enquired as to whether it was available on CD and the man behind the counter was pretty evasive. I then asked him what it was called and he refused to tell me! Told me to look it up on my iphone! Needless to say I won't be going back there. Totally pretentious, more interested in exclusivety than music. Poor show! James
