Among the plethora of problems a football manager can face, keeping quiet while a celebrity fan wades into a row with the board is not the toughest. Yet after feeling the need to balance praise for Tommy Smith's performances with an admission that Watford are a 'selling club', and voicing hope that Smith is not subject to this policy, Aidy Boothroyd must have secretly agreed with Elton John's recent comments about a lack of investment. Nevertheless, he was right that his job is simply to get the team winning – something the Hornets have only managed inconsistently so far. There is every chance the good form of Will Hoskins can help the club put the sad early retirement of Damien Francis behind them in the coming weeks, but this will be a demanding fixture. Cardiff may miss Joe Ledley due to the torn hamstring that kept him out of the Wales team, but they have made a bright start to the season and have yet to lose an away game. Rob Hastings
