The Union Theatre has long programmed an annual show of short plays, which can be something of a mixed bag. This year they've teamed up with the Koestler Trust, which promotes artistic activity in Britain's prisons, to put on a show of work entered for its playwriting competition. What the Union's Sasha Regan has come up with is nine short pieces, mostly extracted from full-length plays, by seven writers, mostly inmates, some now released. Only one piece actually takes place inside – John Wrigglesworth's 'Taking the Piss', detailing the intricacies of urine-testing for drug use. Others show fantasies of freedom. Most strange of all is Dean Stalham's 'If The Cap Fits', set in an East End pub, which comes on like a gay Pinter tribute, all camp, glowering menace and surreal juxtapositions. The selection punches way above its weight, thanks to its unique provenance. There is also some quite excellent acting, not least Liam Smith and Jay Carter in two short, haunting monologues, 'Shipmates' and 'Listen'. Listen, indeed.
