Around 350 hardy swimmers aged from teens to eighties will be taking the plunge in water just above freezing point, and competing in individual and team freestyle, 'head-up breast stroke' and relay events over 30 metres, plus a 450-metre 'endurance' race. A range of outlandish hats and costumes is promised, emphasising that this is only a mildly competitive affair. It's the third year of the championship, intended mainly to promote the health and enjoyment aspects of outdoor swimming, and showcase Britain's spectacular lido heritage. It's too late to enter, but spectators can enjoy a hog roast and real ale plus the comparative comfort of a marquee.
