The Skolars were the surprise package of this season's Northern Rail Cup, a competition in which they'd previously been out of their depth. Victories over Super League wannabes Celtic Crusaders and former Challenge Cup winners Sheffield Eagles have given Tony Benson's squad justifiable optimism going into the league programme, and there's every reason to expect an improvement on last term's tally of eight wins and a fourth-from-bottom finish. Hornets are among the game's well-known names now fallen on hard times, and looking to rebuild after a catastrophic campaign that included a 106-0 defeat by Castleford. Former GB star Bobbie Goulding is the man charged with turning things around, though he'll find the Skolars in ebullient mood. Andrew Shields
