The County Championship is a three-tier competition for players below elite level. The eight leading sides now contest the Bill Beaumont Trophy – named after one of English rugby's greatest servants who was a staunch supporter of the county game – with Middlesex and Devon among the dominant forces dating back to the early 1900s.
