  • The Championship seems swamped by the Friends Provident Trophy group games during the early part of the season, and Somerset have yet to make any major statements of intent. Kent, however, have been bolstered by the news that Justin Kemp can play after an appeal board overturned the ECB decision to veto his registration following his involvement in the Indian Cricket League. Azhar Mahmood got the nod initially from the ECB because he's now England-qualified. Confused? Somerset won the Div 2 title last year thanks to five batters topping 1,000 runs on Taunton's flat tracks and Andy Caddick and Charl Willoughby proving tireless. However, both new-ball bowlers are long in the tooth and Rob Key and Martin van Jaarsveld may fancy tucking in at Tunbridge Wells. Andrew Shields
