In which two clubs vie for the right to become next season's Derby County (or have promoted Stoke already grabbed that role?). Of the two play-off semi-finals, Bristol City's win over Crystal Palace was the more eye-catching given the Eagles' extraordinary progress under Neil Warnock, while Hull's 6-1 aggregate success came against a woebegone Watford side. Nick Barmby and Dean Windass were central to the Tigers' triumph though surely only sentiment could see Phil Brown relying on these two, with a combined age of 73, in the Premier League. Bristol City have a sound infrastructure and, in Gary Johnson, a boss with a burgeoning reputation. The acid test for both clubs would be whether they stuck with their talented young managers in what would surely be a traumatic top-flight baptism. Andrew Shields
