Britain's first new racecourse since 1927 is open to the public after years of delay. Some facilities need further development, but the fact that the track is functioning at all will begin to rectify the lop-sided map of venues near London – currently concentrated in the south and south-west. Unlike previous all-weather circuits that were laid around existing turf, this one is purpose-built, with a busy programme of floodlit evening and afternoon meetings.
