Wembley Stadium events
Tickets for Saturday’s England v Italy under-21 international sold out within six hours. But which other events will be gracing the much-delayed £757 million venue in the coming months?
The fixtures listed below will all be confirmed once the stadium’s safety certificate has been issued following Saturday’s second ‘ramp-up’ event with a reduced capacity of 60,000. It’s also expected that one or more England football internationals will be staged in May, with Brazil and Argentina touted as possible opponents.
May 19, FA Cup final: Six FA Cup finals have been shunted down the M4 and boosted Cardiff’s reputation no end. Some might consider a Manchester United v Chelsea final a more fitting opener than Blackburn v Middlesbrough.
Feature continues
May 26-28, Coca-Cola Championship and League play-off finals: Three matches that will capture the joy of winning promotion and, for one club, the financial bonanza of reaching the Premiership. The Championship play-off final will be the richest ever, with the winners earning £50 million from the new TV deal.
August 25, Rugby League Challenge Cup final: Not forgetting the 13-a-side game, which also has a strong connection with Wembley. The last seven finals have been shared between Twickenham, Murrayfield and the Millennium Stadium.
September 8, England v Israel
September 12, England v Russia
October 13, England v Estonia
November 21, England v Croatia, all Euro 2008 qualifiers: Saturday’s game in Israel and the return with Andorra on March 28 are pivotal fixtures for Steve McLaren’s side. Fail to pick up six points and England’s campaign could start to look very messy indeed.
December 16, Race of Champions: This motorsport shoot-out pits the world’s leading circuit racers and off-road drivers against each other on parallel tracks to determine who’s fastest.
