Taste new flavours, go wild outside and explore the world – all without leaving London
This summer it couldn't be easier to be a tourist in your own town. After work and all day at weekends, some of the most exciting experiences you could enjoy anywhere in the world are waiting for you.Enjoy cuisines from around the world, take to the air, see exotic animals, relax in beautiful countryside, or even board a UFO – all without leaving London. Most of them are FREE to enjoy and – even better – they’re easy to get to, with Transport for London.
For children who have never seen what a pig really looks like and grown-ups who want to retreat to something enjoyably rural for just an hour of their day, London’s vibrant city farm scene is the bees knees. Feed animals, help with the gardening or just say hi to the birds and beasts before relaxing in the cafés.
Along with sheep, goats and cows, at this friendly city farm on the Isle of Dogs you can spot a rather more exotic breed of beast – the alpaca! Say hi to the fluffy four-legged stars of Newham City Farm out in the fields, with the somewhat strange backdrop of high-rise Canary Wharf behind them. While you’re here there are lots of family friendly activities to join in with, too.

In the heart of the city you might not expect to hear (or smell) the countryside but just a designer handbag’s throw from the highly fashionable markets and boutiques of east London you can come nose to snout with all kinds of farmyard animals, including Bayleaf the donkey and Bramble the goat. There are volunteering opportunities too and lively performance events at weekends.

Just off one of the busiest road systems in London, this compact community farm offers a chance to see nature close up. There are farm animals and allotments as well as a duck pond and ecology garden where the stag beetle nursery enjoys life tucking into old woody tree remains. The farm runs classes too, and it grows plants to make dyes for wool. A unique rural experience in an urban setting.
