This is a classic example of theatre that's all about context. It's a celebration of Zimbabwe by a company called Theatre Under Fire, whose members are refugees. The show itself is a nostalgic revue in which the seven-strong cast depict their lives, and those of people like them, back in Africa: herding cattle, marrying their sweethearts, worshipping rain gods in the Matobo Hills near Bulawayo. They sing beautiful call-and-response mouth-music to the accompaniment of djembe drums. The final set-piece is a tiger skin-clad religious rite. It's loud, mesmerising, passionate – and a little awkward, because it makes entertainment out of an act of devotion. But when the company stays onstage for a post-show chat, their hymn to Zimbabwe gains a more urgent perspective. The performance is diverting; the conversation is essential.
