Designer Naomi Dawson uses the close scale of the Gate Theatre to make the audience feel the claustrophobic paranoia which is the main – at times the only – emotional dimension of Falk Richter's dystopic German drama. A glass wall separates the actors from the play's Woman and Man, who are trapped in their living room, their lives, and a gated community which seems to be echoing with gunshots underneath the soothing pumped-in muzak of the waves. Why are they nameless? Well, Richter's play has aspirations towards Orwellian, universal political significance – meaning it raises some big personal and political questions about ideological imprisonment, but expresses them too vaguely to keep the audience completely gripped.
