Romeo (Adetomiwa Edun) and his pals are a gang of giddy, capering youths, with Philip Cumbus's Mercutio an especially wonderful creation: in truth, Dominic Dromgoole's production never quite recovers its élan after his dramatically premature death. As the iconic star-crossed lovers, the gesturally stiff Ellie Kendrick (recently seen in the title role of the BBC's 'The Diary of Anne Frank') and Edun don't have a great deal of chemistry. That's a serious deficit, of course, but there's no denying its overall charm.
