Time Out says Rate it

Kfir Yfet's production of Ibsen's 'A Doll's House' makes Gillian Anderson's bullied wife Nora and her sanctimonious shit of a husband Thomas (the excellent Toby Stephens) into a dressy Edwardian power couple riding high on his recent appointment to the Cabinet. Ibsen's shocking story of a woman's struggle for self-knowledge and power is thus translated into an enjoyably pertinent political melodrama. Gillian Anderson's Nora is beautiful, tender and entirely sympathetic. But the crudeness and the anachronistic tone are set by Zinnie Harris's adaptation which includes janglingly un-Edwardian moments like Fitzgerald calling her husband an 'old sod.' All the men are sods in Kfir Yfet's beautifully staged but slightly jittery production. When Nora walks out, you feel that one of them has got his comeuppance - but you never feel the devastating impact that lack of equality and a house built on lies can have on a whole family.
