A costly two-year legal battle, a broken wedding engagement, a prematurely terminated university education and ill-health is a high price to pay to clear the name of a 13-year-old-boy accused of stealing a five shilling postal order. But for father Arthur Winslow - coloured in shades of imposing dark and tender, devotional, fatherly light by the excellent Timothy West - his motivation is as straightforward as the crime committed. 'An injustice has been done. I am going to set it right, and there is no sacrifice in the world I am not prepared in order to do so'. Stephen Unwin's accomplished production never leaves the audience in any doubt that this is the right thing to do, demonstrating the enduring veracity of Terence Rattigan's writing. Remarkably, for a play that is at least in part a legal drama, all the action takes place in the Winslow drawing room. But it's brought to sumptuous life through Simon Higlett's elegant, angular set and a strong cast.
