This stately dance through the later lives of characters invented for Ingmar Bergman's 1973 film, 'Scenes From a Marriage', became the great director's last cinematic release. It was a fitting farewell, particularly given the autobiographical touches: the protagonist, Johan, is a domineering philanderer eternally struggling with two incompatible emotions (misanthropy and a fear of death that means he cannot be alone).
Marianne (Eileen Nicholas) comes to visit the ex-husband she hasn't seen for decades. Why? She feels he is calling her. Ulla Svahnström Kaplow and Jeffry Kaplow treat this dangerously powerful script with great respect, helped by a quartet of actors (including Jeffry Kaplow as Johan) who can withstand the inevitable comparisons with Bergman's originals, and a set whose minimalist strangeness reflects the terse beauties of the text.
