In spite of their enormous influence on British comedy, Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise appear these days to flicker at a distance, as if seen through the wrong end of a telescope. It's not that they are small - except in the most literal sense, in Wise's case, they could never be that. But they seem so far away. Both men worked their way up through variety and radio, sped on by pushy parents, changing Jewish names to get ahead. They married once each and stayed married, performed in suits, abused only the legal drugs. They're like funny fossils from an era where half the population could and did watch a single TV programme.
Bob Golding does a fine job as Morecambe in Tim Whitnall's biographical one-man transfer from Edinburgh, prancing round the stage in thick black glasses mouthing lines more familiar to us than our parents and clutching a ventriloquist's dummy that may constitute the sourest laugh Ernie Wise ever got. But Golding never gets past the persona: the Morecambe we see is entirely familiar, and why he behaved as he did, or how he felt about that behaviour, remains opaque. Despite Golding and director Guy Masterson's best efforts, we're still watching Eric through that reversed telescope, marvelling at a time when dinosaurs roamed the stage.

My wife and i saw a matinee performance of this show , today , saturday 09/01/2010. What can you say but fantastic, full of laughs and not a little pathos, Bob Golding fully deserved the standing ovation he received , he truly brought us sunshine on a very chilly day.
From those we know who saw it at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to those who were lucky enought to be the first to see it this week, we have heard nothing but 5* accolades and praise - a must see show of brilliance. Just can't wait to see it for ourselves on Boxing Day. Our Christmas will be complete!!
Went to the opening night on Wednesday, thought that this was absolutely 5*. Bob Golding really brings alive the character and personality of Eric Morcombe and keeps you hooked. This is a MUST SEE!
