Jyothi works in New York; Vidya, Giri and Ross work in Illinois, and Avinash, thanks to demotion, is about to be sent there too. But he's not going far, because the whole of the United States, geographically mapped out in terms of its bad debts, is microcosmically contained in a Chennai call centre. Here, staff toil throughout the night - daytime in the West - to claw back money from the maxed-out and overstretched. Deadlines are tight, targets exigent, and rule number one is that they never admit they're calling from India. Anupama Chandrasekhar's drama makes some sharp observations about the politics of money and aspiration. If the American dream has turned nightmare for the recession-bitten debtors, it's equally treacherous for the young call-centre workers. The play suffers from a shortage of impetus and incident, and the office setting makes it static - a problem Indhu Rubasingham's production doesn't solve. But it's persuasively acted, and thematically it's as piercingly insistent as the shrill ring of an unanswered phone.
