My wife and I attended La Traviata in the Gatehouse in Highgate Village last night. Having seen the ROH production less than a month ago, I did not set my expectations high for this fringe opera above a pub. I was not just pleasantly surprised, but overwhelmed by the level of talent displayed by this young and handsome cast of singers. In particular the singing and stunning acting of the two lead characters - Claire Egan as Violetta, and Robin Bailey as her lover Alfredo. These two performers are names to watch. They took us on such a journey from start to finish, with simply sublime and heart-felt acting. Tenor, Robin Bailey has a creamy lyric voice filled with passion and beauty, and soprano Claire Egan could not be more perfect for this role, combining thrilling coloratura, with power and such beautiful vulnerability in her final scene that much of the audience were reduced to tears. DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW!!!
