This is seriously intelligent children's theatre that's also great fun. Written by Charles Way for audiences aged 7-11, it tells the story of Jim (his name echoing 'Treasure Island'), a boy with a serious piratical fixation. In his bedroom he creates thrilling maritime adventures for plundering, villainous seadogs - but his games become a terrifying reality when the old chest in the corner turns into a portal to the past.

Suddenly Jim, trembling in his pyjamas, is thrust into a world of bloodthirsty buccaneers. The female pirate captain bears a striking resemblance to his free-spirited mum, who left the family home some years before; the law-abiding naval commander she crosses swords with is just like his disciplinarian dad. In their skirmishes, the frightened child and his needs are often, poignantly, overlooked.

The domestic and the fantastical are ingeniously blended, and plenty of swashbuckling action, as well as comedy from a pair of dopey deckhands, ensure that the play never becomes worthy. Jonathan Lloyd's production could do with a little more pace, but it's full of clever details and Liz Cooke's shipshape designs are a pleasure. Watch out for two squabbling sharks. Delightful.
