Time Out says

3 out of 5 stars

Although it's set within Hyde Park's Winter Wonderland, Zippos Cirque Extreme couldn't be much more different from the sea of festive Europhilia that surrounds it.

While the Wonderland hawks bratwurst and mulled wine in mock-Alpine chalets, Zippos is all steam-punk shock and awe with an industrial soundtrack – you can imagine parents visiting with children having a degree of trepidation when the show gets started to a metal accompaniment. But, despite the image, it's all wholesome family fun - even a troupe of droog-like breakdancers manage to keep the kids in mind with a restrained, yet playful, routine.

Jugglers, acrobats and dancers all perform with aplomb, although there was a disappointing moment on our visit when a trapeze artist's final flourish was spoilt by the big top's low roof getting in the way.

When the much anticipated motorcycle 'Globe of Death' was wheeled out along with the promise of a spectacular finale, it seemed much too small and not at all deathly enough - such is the morbidly expectant mood the circus inspires. Of course, any doubts quickly disappeared once there were three gold-clad Brazilians riding scramblers around it at near-impossible angles.

That final act brings some genuine class to a show that is occasionally more burlesque style than acrobatic substance. At an hour long it feels too brief, and one or two of the acts seemed dislocated and a little under-experienced. Luckily, the originality and enthusiasm of the performers keeps it enjoyable – and at £24 for a family of four, the price is reasonable.
