  • 1 Black Watch
Every bit as good as the hype suggests. Gregory Burke’s play based on interviews with members of the famous Scottish regiment about their time in Iraq is brought alive in a powerful physical production by the National Theatre of Scotland.
    Traverse 4, 0131 228 1404

    2 Improbable Frequency

Exquisite World War II drama involving John Betjeman, Schrodinger (minus the cat) and a hotshot crossword-puzzle-solver-turned spy. Irish company Rough Magic turns in a slyly witty production that looks as if it’s leapt straight out of a picture book: sharply clever and with some of the funniest lines to be heard in Edinburgh this year.
    Traverse, 0131 228 1404

    3 Metamorphoses

Young company Black Lens have created an enchanting production around a swimming-pool based on Ovid’s 'Metamorphoses'.

    4 The Receipt
Perrier-winner Will Adamsdale and soundman Chris Branch present a bracingly intelligent absurdist comedy about a man searching for humanity in a city drowning in corporate-speak.
    Assembly Rooms, 0131 226 2428

    5 Ketzal
The famous St Petersburg clown troupe creates images of apocalyptic beauty in a mesmerising show that redefines the way we look at the human body.
    Aurora Nova, 0131 558 3853

    6 Food
A satirical piece focusing on a chef who wins three Michelin stars, and then realises that the only way is down. Enjoyable physical theatre from theatre company theimaginarybody.
    Traverse Theatre, 0131 228 1404

    7 Talk Radio
Though I’m not a fan of films turned into plays, this production - based on Eric Gagosian’s movie about a shock jock, directed by Stewart Lee, and starring Phil Nichol – certainly shines an entertaining and intelligent light onto the American mentality today.
    Udderbelly, 0870 745 3083

    8 The Sperm Monologues
Despite the crass name, an often funny and occasionally touching piece about the messages men would like to give to the child resulting from their donation when they reach their eighteenth birthdays.
    Udderbelly, 0870 745 3083

    9 Particularly in the Heartland

Fringe First winner - a wonderful idiosyncratic picture of America, which includes Dorothy from 'The Wizard of Oz' and Bobby Kennedy. The storytelling defies logic, but just let yourself be carried along on this funny surreal journey.
    Traverse Theatre, 0131 228 1404

    10 Into The Hoods
Much feted hip-hop version of Stephen Sondheim's 'Into The Woods.'

I just need to make a correction of your above comments......
#7, Talk Radio was written by Eric Bogosian as a play prior to being made into a film.
