A display of images from this annual photography competition, which receives hundreds of entries from professional and amateur photographers from locations as diverse as the Cook Islands, Death Valley and Glastonbury Tor. On display in the Royal Observatory's Astronomy Centre, the show includes works in four main categories: 'Earth and Space', 'Our Solar System', 'Deep Space' and 'Young Astronomy Photographer of the Year'. Australia-based photographer Martin Pugh claimed the top prize for the second time, impressing the judges with his shot of the Whirlpool Galaxy (M51) and its small companion galaxy being gradually torn apart by the gravity of its giant neighbour. Numerous other entries focus on one of the year's biggest astronomical events, the transit of Venus, which won't occur again for another 105 years.
