How does it feel to be chosen as a Time Out London hero?

Michael Nunn: ‘A fantastic and surprising honour. But aren’t the heroes the wrong people to ask?’

What’s the biggest thing that’s happened in your field in London in the last 40 years?

MN: ‘I’d say the creation of our company, Ballet Boyz, in 2000. We create accessible dance with inaccessible steps. A whole new genre.’ William Trevitt: ‘And a field of two. [Both laugh]’

What’s your personal favourite moment in London? Where were you, and what was happening?

MN: ‘We were presented with the Rose d’Or television award at Sadler’s Wells recently. We couldn’t attend the ceremony, so we finished our show and they gave it to us live on stage. That was quite a nice surprise.’WT: ‘I can remember the day of the poll tax riots and having a view from the top of the Royal Opera House of everything going on, and going out afterwards and seeing the destruction. That was a pretty exciting moment of political strength.’

What’s the future for your field in London? What are your hopes and what needs to happen?

WT: ‘All the people who watch “Strictly Come Dancing” and those kind of shows need to realise that they enjoy watching dance, and should go to a theatre to see dance of any kind – so those massive audience figures translate into theatre-goers.’

What does Time Out mean to you?

‘A good way to judge dance as an art form in London is how many pages in Time Out it gets. That’s the single thing that would improve our lives, to have more pages about dance in Time Out.’

    Complete the sentence: London is…

MN: ‘…wet and cold.’WT: ‘In July. It’s also the best place for dance in the entire world.’ See all Time Out's 40th birthday London heroes
