Until recently if you wanted to explore London by boat, you could expect a pretty sedate experience. Charlie Matheson's slick RIB (rigid inflatable boat) operation has changed all that.

You can book by phone or online or turn up at Waterloo Millennium Pier on spec. Arrive 20 minutes before the off to be kitted out with a waterproof jacket (you're unlikely to get wet unless it's actually raining but you may be glad of the warmth) and a life jacket. Specially adapted steps with a handrail mean that boarding is very easy, making the trip suitable for all ages.

The experience starts calmly enough, with a Thames Waterman providing a commentary about the bridges and buildings in central London. Then, once you're past Tower Bridge, the skipper of the 12-seater RIB opens up the engine and heads for Greenwich and you'll discover how exhilarating it can be to swoop along the Thames at almost 30 knots, leaving the lumbering traditional river cruisers far behind.
