St Patrick's Day Parade and Festival

The Irish are ace at partying. So good, in fact, they even have a special untranslatable phrase – the craic – to describe their unique brand of conviviality. They manage to have a brilliant time in the most unpromising locations – your typical Irish church hall is gloomier than Eeyore.
So, with Trafalgar Square as the setting for London’s official bash in celebration of their patron saint, a blast is pretty much guaranteed. As it takes place on Sunday March 16, a sizeable proportion of the population (not all of them Irish by a long chalk) is set to be looking appropriately green the day after, which is when St Patrick’s Day actually falls.
The theme for this year’s parade, which starts at noon in Piccadilly, is ‘World of Dance’. The line-up features a variety of dance groups as well as marching bands, floats and assorted pageantry (look out for the giant figure of St P himself). Heading along Lower Regent Street and Pall Mall, the procession will wind up in Trafalgar Square, where the craic continues all afternoon.
Riverdance will be headlining, six months ahead of a twentieth anniversary tour for the troupe responsible for taking the distinctive dance style (all lightning legs and motionless upper limbs) mainstream. There are performances from the cast of West End musical ‘The Commitments’, and Irish folk group Kíla. And the London Irish Comedy Festival Marquee hosts Ireland’s established and emerging comedians for the afternoon.
This year, for the first time, there’s also an official St Patrick’s Day ballroom dance, in the splendour of Westminster Cathedral Hall in Victoria (2pm to 6pm). Like the rest of the festival, it’s free (tickets will be available on the door on the day).
Back in Trafalgar Square, the Irish Food Market will be promoting farmhouse cheeses, smoked fish, crumbly soda bread and all sorts of other delicacies from the Emerald Isle. All good stomach-lining stuff, judicious consumption of which could just help revellers make it in to work next Monday, when the shamrocks have all wilted and the party’s over for another year.
