This new display in the London, Sugar and Slavery gallery features prints and newspaper cuttings from 1780-1833 depicting men and women from the African diaspora in different walks of society – among them soldiers, musicians and sportsmen. These fascinating objects are drawn from the private collection of Leslie Braine-Ikomi and invite us to look at how these initially crude but increasingly sympathetic depictions helped to create a sense of belonging for Black Britons.
