Normandy

From the Norman Conquest to the D-Day landings, Normandy is important to Britons and French alike. Tour the region where painters like Courbet, Turner and the Impressionists were fascinated by the light, and the historic capital of Rouen with its wonderful gothic Cathédrale Notre-Dame so beloved of Monet.

Visit the Utah Beach Museum at Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, and the underground passages and defence system at the battery at Azeville, for a real insight into the greatest amphibious operation in military history.

Versailles

The 17th-century court of Versailles was the French powerhouse for over 100 years, until the Revolution, and the wealth of the ancien regime is still jaw-dropping. See the glittering Hall of Mirrors, exquisite gardens and ‘simple’ luxury of Marie Antoinette’s Petit Trianon estate, her refuge from the pressures of court life. An audio guide is included in the price.

Disneyland Paris

Fun for all ages. Parc Disneyland is great for young kids, with the Cheshire Cat and wicked Queen of Hearts hiding away in Alice’s Curious Labyrinth, while older kids and adults will prefer the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror or the megafast Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster of Parc Walt Disney Studios.

Giverny

The gardens at Giverny are immediately recognisable, thanks to the dozens of versions that Claude Monet painted when he settled here in 1883. The Clos Normand is beautifully laid out with simple flowers and rare varieties. The water garden, with its famous view of the Japanese bridge and water lilies, lies over the road.

Reims

How to celebrate a visit to Reims? With a glass of fizz, of course, as you’re in the heart of Champagne. You can visit all the historic champagne houses to try before you buy. Another reason to celebrate is the awe-inspiring gothic Cathédrale Notre-Dame, in which every French king was crowned from the 11th century on.
