With an appointed joke planner and copious amounts of vodka, it’s safe to say that an Eastern European wedding lacks the gravitas of a Sikh marriage ceremony. Yet despite the fake breasts, potties, boxing gloves and nurse uniforms, this is still considered a day of supreme importance.

Focusing on Eastern European couple Vlod and Sasha and Sikh couple Dav and Kami, ‘A Very British Wedding’ is a surprisingly touching and fascinating insight into two weddings separated by vastly different traditions, cultural roots and beliefs. But despite their obvious contrasts, the emotion of both occasions is palpable, particularly Kami’s devastation at having to leave the family home (which borders on cruel), and Vlod’s disappointment that his family can’t attend.

Interspersing the rituals and emotion of a Sikh ceremony with the farcical elements of Vlod and Sasha’s special day gives the show a welcome variety, making it insightful, profound and silly by turns. Traditional white weddings these most certainly aren’t, but they’re all the more entertaining for it.
