Being Paul Gascoigne
Tue Sep 24, 9-10pm, ITV
Tue Sep 17 2013
Sadly, the title alone is enough to send a shiver down the spine. For all of his lavish, squandered gifts, we suspect being Paul Gascoigne isn’t much fun. No preview copies were available for this documentary, but it promises ‘unprecedented access to his private life over a three-month period’. We can’t help but wonder whether this is a good thing, not least for Gascoigne himself whose struggles, disgraces and relapses have increasingly come to define his public profile. Presumably he needs the money, but there must be easier ways.
Anyway, we’re promised (or threatened with, depending on your appetite for this kind of stuff) an exploration of his battle with alcoholism and a look at his attempts to rebuild his relationship with his ex-wife and kids. We wish him well and hope for an appropriate level of editorial restraint.
