He’s still standing. Or sitting at his piano, at any rate. Better than he ever did. Or putting out better albums than most would have expected – his latest, ‘The Diving Board’, is apparently pretty decent. So, after 40 years in the business and plenty of records sold, Elton’s having a whole new award minted by the Brits to place alongside all his other ones.

And why not? He’s been good for the British record industry, a steady fundraiser for Aids charities and a pretty good ambassador for new talent, while creatively the peaks just about balance the troughs. Above all, with years of Las Vegas residencies behind him, he knows how to put on a show; even if in this case that means having to duet with fellow crumbly Rod Stewart as well as bash out the hits. If you’re at a loose end and have somehow never seen Reg doing ‘Your Song’, you could do worse.
