As BBC3’s mental-health season winds on, you might fear that it would start to repeat itself. Remarkably, this hasn’t been the case. This time, the gimmick involves taking a forensically scientific approach to five individuals struggling with mental-health issues such as OCD, anorexia nervosa and schizophrenia.

It’s an admirable goal, but the sgements of cerebral analysis do sap the pace of the documentary a little, suggesting that BBC3 and serious science don’t always mix well. Even so, the bravery and candour of the participants, as they explain their conditions and take part in research projects, ensure that this is an engaging affair, and the treatment is as empathetic as we’ve come to expect from this channel’s much-maligned but increasingly impressive documentary output.
