Episode one
‘A rather grand auntie who would take you out for tea and cake,’ muses regular Liberty browser Grayson Perry. ‘But not many people are old auntie fetishists.’ Like so many other venerated institutions, the 130-year-old London department store is trying to modernise while clinging to its traditions. This three-part fly-on-the-wall series demonstrates some of the difficulties, while remaining largely on-message about its general loveliness as both place of work and place to shop.

The conflicts are minor (watching boss and modern-day Mr Selfridge Ed Burstall having his zanier ideas diplomatically defused is a hoot) and the triumphs trumpeted as the build-up to Christmas begins in July, while celebrity cameos include Felix Dennis and shoe designer Manolo Blahnik. Ostentatious consumption a-go-go with a side order of mild delusion? Perfect festive fare.
