‘Doctor Who’, it’s generally agreed, was the product of a BBC committee, rather than being one man’s vision. That fact probably explains the huge diversity of significance that people attach to the show, but also why this Whovian history lesson from Matthew Sweet feels a bit inconsequential.

Stars apart, the programme attracted huge talents, including Delia Derbyshire, Terry Nation and Douglas Adams, and Sweet generously spends as much time with them as with the Doctors. But it’s the Doctors who are the problem. Like Sherlock Holmes, the Doctor is ultimately a collection of writerly, thespian and wardrobe tics, and ploughing through the quasi-royal succession of interpreters yields little. Normally you’d say one for fans only, but in this case, I’m not so sure.
