Episode one
Violent, barbaric, historically inaccurate and chock-full of immoral atrocities and fictional nonsense, ‘The Bible’ is at least true to its source material. But at least the Old Testament isn’t riddled with hammy acting and inadvertent hilarity. TV miniseries ‘The Bible’ is a compilation of the Christian holy book’s biggest hits, with tonight’s opener focusing on everything from Adam and Eve to the Binding of Isaac and the Plagues of Egypt.

The stories are presented in insipid, uninspiring fashion, and moments of relatively impressive CGI are jarringly coupled with a glut of cringeworthy scenes which look like they were shot for a school project. Yet for all its visual failings and poor writing, it’s the acting that really undoes ‘The Bible’. Unconvincing, overdone and at times downright ridiculous, any gravitas the show might have had is utterly negated.

In one memorable sequence, footage of frogs, hail et al. is interspersed with repeated instants of the Pharaoh shouting, ‘No!’ at Moses. It’s very silly indeed. ‘The Bible’ may be an ambitious project, but unfortunately for fans of the book, the end result is woeful.
