On close inspection, ITV’s Elvis fest is an even more cynical affair than it might first appear – the 20 classics in the list will be appearing on a compilation album whose release is nicely timed for Christmas. Because there aren’t enough Elvis ‘Best Ofs’ in the world, are there? You can probably guess the tracks and the talking heads on what’s essentially a really long advert – look forward to contributions from Cliff Richard, Mike Bublé and Engelbert Humperdinck.
C5’s contribution to your Friday night coma is probably slightly more palatable, if no less tired; we don’t know about you, but we could sit and gaze at old clips of ‘Bagpuss’, ‘Blue Peter’, ‘Captain Pugwash’ and ‘Tiswas’ for hours. And tonight, we’ll get the chance. C4 used to run the list TV game with sightly more style than C5 can usually muster, but this will still be dangerously addictive.
