These two cosy pubs should warm up the chilliest autumn nights
One of the good things about the clocks going back is that by the time of bonfire night the dark evenings are perfect for fireworks. Even adults can’t help but utter a collective ‘ooh’ and ‘ahh’ when a spectacular rocket explodes across the London skyline. Clapham Common, Brockwell Park and Streatham Common will all have major fireworks events this Friday, starting at 7.30pm. They’re laid on by Festival Fireworks, who are the current ‘Pyromusical Champions’, so expect a major extravaganza. There’s also a display at Battersea Park on Saturday from 6.30pm.
In north London, Alexandra Palace takes its fireworks seriously: the display starts at 7.30pm but the fun begins at 4.30pm when the fair opens. Also north of the river is east London’s favourite display, at Victoria Park, on Saturday. The fireworks take place after dark, but the funfair and seasonal festivities kick off from 2pm.
South
Windmill on the Common
This hotel and gastropub at the edge of Clapham Common is the perfect place to meet friends. Warm yourselves by the fire with a pint of Young’s cask conditioned Bitter, Special, Wells Bombardier or a continental lager before heading out to see the fireworks. And afterwards… the pub serves food until 10.30pm so there’s time for a warming supper.

North
The Flask
The original pub on this site used to bottle local spring water, hence the name. The present building dates from 1874, and the lovingly restored interior, complete with glass screens and painted panels, make it an elegant and cosy place to meet. After you unwind with a pint of Winter Warmer or Courage Directors, why not head off to Hampstead Heath? Parliament Hill is a great vantage point from which to enjoy the many fireworks displays across London.

Bursting with taste, Young’s Bitter is a refreshing cask ale with a fruity aroma that leaves a long, satisfying bitter finish. It is traditionally brewed to deliver a clean taste and is light and dry in flavour with a subtle taste of hops.
