  • The Urban Retreat: Autumn Walks

  • By Time Out editors

  • Enjoy an autumn stroll along the capital's riverside, soak up some much-needed peace and tranquillity and stop for a pint, or three, along the way

  • On crisp autumn days with the blue sky above and the Thames running by, a riverside walk is a great way to escape the capital’s bustle. From Tower Bridge to Hampton Court, many of the city’s most magnificent landmarks overlook the river. Whether you fancy a concert, an exhibition at the newly refurbished Southbank Centre, or want to enjoy the landscape lit up as you take an evening stroll, you'll not have to go far.

    The White Cross
This local institution has been packing in the crowds like nobody’s business for generations. It’s a traditional pub that has been lovingly refurbished to retain its treasured atmosphere. You can’t get much more ‘riverside’ than the White Cross – there are even separate entrances for low and high tide. Watch the golden days of autumn pass off from one of the bay windows, or enjoy the real fire and secluded upstairs lounge. If you’ve got your winter jumper on, take a seat outside by the water as you sup a pint of Young’s Winter Warmer, or one of the many other delights the pub has on tap.

    The Founders Arms
Sitting on the South Bank between Blackfriars Bridge and the Millennium Footbridge, the Founders Arms is a perfect stopping-off point on a stroll along London’s greatest arts promenade. Tate Modern and the reconstructed Shakespeare's Globe Theatre are only a couple of minutes’ walk away, and the pub’s huge windows look out towards the iconic north bank scenery of St Paul’s Cathedral and the City. If you’re on a morning walk you’ll find this is a great place for brunch and a coffee. At other times, call in for Young’s beer-battered fish and chips, or a pint of Young’s Bitter.
    52 Hopton St, Bankside SE1 9JH (020 7928 1899/www.foundersarms.co.uk).

Bursting with taste, Young’s Bitter is a refreshing cask ale with a fruity aroma that leaves a long, satisfying bitter finish. It is traditionally brewed to deliver a clean taste and is light and dry in flavour with a subtle taste of hops.
