Gielgud Theatre

Gielgud Theatre review

Known as the Globe Theatre until 1994 - when it was renamed after the legendary actor John Gielgud ahead of the opening of Shakespeare's Globe on the South Bank - the Gielgud is a fine example of Sprague design. The eminent architect behind the Lyceum, Aldwych and Novello among others was well regarded for his elegant, classical flourishes and the Gielgud is no exception. Strikingly situated at the corner of Rupert Street on Shaftesbury Avenue, the Gielgud has a reputation for staging solid British dramas from Alan Ayckbourn premieres to Alan Bennett's psychedelic 'Enjoy'.

I went to see this show on the 5t June - the first week of its transfer to the gielgud theatre.
I saw the show two years ago at the Noel Coward, and thoroughly enjoyed it, but now however, i feel the show has run its course. It just seemed really tired, and the actors seemed to be bored! They didn't seem to have any energy, which was a real shame, as the music is great!
I was really disappointed, and some of my relatives from America also saw it, and they said it was not a patch on the American production...
I see this as a 'filler' show, obviously the Gielgud needed something to fill it, and Avenue Q can do that - but for how long?
Certainly i feel its time it closed, before its cult status is lost.
