The king of alfresco venues, The Scoop, has it all: a riverside location, brilliant acoustics and enough space for 800 picnicking people. This sunken amphitheatre is just outside City Hall, its grey steps coming to life every summer as it hosts a juicy mix of theatre, cinema and music. Considering the programme is entirely free, the calibre of performances here is excellent. A production of Brecht's 'The Caucasian Chalk Circle' was a hit in 2006 and film highlights are usually a mix of weepy classics, action films and new releases. Free ticketing does, however, make the Scoop a popular destination on a balmy night so make sure you grab a bottle of rosé and seat yourself early - a cushion and a blanket should serve you well against the chilly concrete.
