What is 'following'?
This elegant eighteenth-century church is regarded as a masterpiece of baroque architecture. Despite being firebombed in World War II it was restored and transformed into a concert venue. St John's, Smith Square hosts a varied classical programme including more-or-less nightly orchestral and chamber concerts, with occasional vibrant recitals on its magnificent Klais organ. There's a secluded, brick-vaulted restaurant in the crypt, which makes a great place for a cosy glass of wine whether or not there's a concert on that night.

What is 'following'?In reply to Sally Greenhill - Sally, you are correct. The restoration of St John's Smith Square did not begin until 1965, completed I believe around 1969. I worked in Smith Square from 1958 to 1963 and when I left my job in 1963 St John's was still a bomb site.
Please can you tell me when St John's Smith Square was made into a concert venue? I have just seen the film 'An Education' in which the caddish young man takes the heroine to a concert, but I didn't think this became a concert hall until the late-60s (the film is set in 1961). Is this filmmaker's licence?
