St James’s Piccadilly is the only Wren church outside the City to hold free lunchtime recitals (Mon, Wed, Fri at 1.10pm; suggested donation £3.50) and also offers regular evening concerts of all musical varieties. It was first opened to the public in 1648 and has several serious claims to fame – William Blake was baptised here in 1757, Leopold Stokowski was choirmaster from 1902 until 1905 before he became a world-famous conductor and the poet Robert Graves had his wedding here in 1918. The church has a café attached and arts and crafts markets are held at the church from Wednesday to Saturday, with a food market on Monday and Tuesday.

Time Out says
St James’s seeks to be an inclusive, welcoming place for everyone to reflect, create and debate.
As part of our mission to celebrate artistry and ingenuity in every walk of life, St James’s hosts music, talks, performances and exhibitions throughout the year.
Quobna Ottobah Cugoano was one of the most prominent abolitionists of 18th century London. To mark the 250th anniversary of his baptism artist Che Lovelace has created new artwork for the church to be unveiled on 21 September, and a programme of events in October commemorating Cugoano - with creative thinkers like Ben Okri, Desirée Baptiste, Billy Gerard Frank, Ekow Eshun and Julianknxx.
Apollo5 will perform six new tracks for new album Heaven on 19 October.
Our programme of Earth Justice activity is rooted in loving and understanding the whole world and all its inhabitants (human and other-than-human) so that we act from a place of belonging. St James’s achieved Gold Eco Church status in 2018.
We host all forms of big life event services - weddings, baptisms and memorials.
We also offer hospitality to people experiencing homelessness, living on low incomes, going through the gruelling asylum system or suffering from fragile mental health. For decades, St James’s has spoken out on issues close to our heart, especially those concerning refugees, asylum, earth and social justice.
The lunchtime food market is open Mon, Tue, Wed and Thur 11am-3pm, and the Redemption Roasters coffeeshop is open all week.
