Despite its rather unprepossessing entrance off a scrappy yard and its faux-saloon decor, The Borderline is regarded as a Soho musical institution. And with good reason. The basement venue - which turns 21 this year and has had new bars, air-con and toilets fitted in celebration - has offered a stage for acts from Britpop to grunge and alt.folk and all points in between, but is best known for its focus on country, folk and blues (both alternative and more traditional) and Americana acts. It's fairly small (capacity around 275), and the floor area in front of the stage is often sardine-crammed, but otherwise restricted sight lines are much improved by stepped areas. The Borderline has played host to some pretty illustrious names in its time, not least of all the dodgily named Bingo Hand Job - ie REM with Billy Bragg.
