You can almost hear the antsy teenagers tapping their toes as the school year wraps up. That's right, May is the last month to enjoy your favorite LA attractions before summer vacation (and crowds) arrives—parents, time to start brushing up on some kids activities. So make the most of that sweet, pre-summer stretch between Cinco de Mayo and Memorial Day with our May 2014 events calendar.

Lucha Vavoom

  • Price band: 3/4
  • Critics choice

Lucha VaVOOM brings its unique mix of “sexo y violencia” to the Mayan (plus occasional one-off shows elsewhere) with exuberant spectacles throughout the year, most notably with its popular Cinco de Mayo performance. See good vs. evil played out in a sinful circus of masked Mexican wrestling, burlesque stripteasing and comedic commentating—Fred Armisen and Patton Oswalt are among those who have lent their opinion to past matches. Fill up on tequila and tamales while you watch Aztec dancers and luchadores like Li'l Cholo and Crazy Chickens.

  1. Mayan 1038 S Hill St
  2. Until Tue May 5

Tokyo Police Club

  • Price band: 2/4

The four young guys in Tokyo Police Club—which hail from exotic Canada, not Japan—play peppy little songs with a punk undertone. Now four albums into their career, they'll be playing songs from the latest, Forcefield—which, from what we've heard so far, sounds as joyous and full-pelt as ever—at this LA stop on their spring tour. Advance tickets are sold out, but you may be able to snag some at the door.

Unique LA

  • Critics choice

More upscale than your usual craft fair, Unique’s goal is to bring made-in-America design, fashion and art to the masses. Here you’ll find crafts that are a little pricier: gorgeous ceramics from lerf ewe, handmade furniture by Whyrhymer, and couture clothing by Stella Proseyn. Events are held in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles multiple times a year in each location, and feature more than 325 hand-selected designers and artists. Tickets will run you $10 a pop, but you’ll get a free tote bag designed by a local artist, and 10% of your 10 bucks will go to charity. Check out their most current lookbook here.

The Amazing Acro-Cats

  • Price band: 2/4
  • Critics choice

Your cat can push things over, scamper around like a possessed demon and ignore commands, but can it do all of that in front of a paying audience? Enter the Amazing Acro-Cats, a troupe of over a dozen cats (former orphans, rescues and strays) that dazzles feline-loving audiences with its circus-inspired routine. The cats perform—when they feel like it—under the direction of "chief human" Samantha Martin. Plus, after the routine, cowbell player extraordinaire Tuna leads a performance by the Rock Cats, the most adorable noodly band in cat (and chicken, thanks to drummer Cluck Norris) history.

West Coast BBQ Classic

  • Price band: 2/4

California isn’t known for its BBQ, but this festival (now in its third year) is trying to prove otherwise. Over 60 competitors will converge on the waterfront of the Queen Mary to compete for a grand prize of $2,500 and the title of Pitmaster Champion. This family-friendly event will include BBQ tastings (for an additional $2), as well as live bands, a Jack Daniels Lounge and playground for children (who get in free). Be sure to note that parking will cost you $12, and that is with an event validation.

Super Saturday LA

  • Price band: 3/4
  • Critics choice

Once dubbed "the Rolls Royce of garage sales", Super Saturday is a day-long designer charity sale that offers luxe fashion, beauty, and home items for half of the suggested retail price. It started in the Hamptons in support of the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund (100% of proceeds go to the OCRF), and now hosts Rachel Zoe and Molly Sims are bringing their designer deals (Versace! Kate Spade! Trina Turk!) to LA for the first time. If you need some more convincing, Super Saturday is also offering beauty demonstrations, pampering stations, a luxury auction, celebrity appearances, activities, plus gourmet treats (but you had us at "Rolls Royce of garage sales").
